Viscose, Lyocell, Ramie, Faux silk, man-made silk, fake-silk, banana-silk or bamboo silk these are all words for viscose or rayon fiber. It is very soft, and people often think they are getting a great deal on a silk rug, when in fact, they are not. Let’s take a peek at why.
Viscose is well known to shed, break, distort and it will yellow with even a tiny water spill! It is a rayon fiber and chemically made cellulose waste by-products and wood pulp. It is a very toxic process and it is no longer done here in the US. It is generally done overseas, particularly the India region. If you are interested, you can read the article here.
Do remember that real silk is very strong whereas viscose is not. Even just the act of vacuuming it with a standard vacuum can cause some serious damage to the rug. The breaking of fibers, causing strands to pop up all over making it look like it has serious snags to it. It is best to only use a vacuum with suction and no beater bar.
In the photo below, you can see a viscose rug that has some damage. You can clearly see the yellowing from the moisture. Even with a proper cleaning, it could go completely yellow. This is the risk of having a viscose rug, instead of a wool or real silk rug.
